Who Said Vegans Cant Be Bodybuilders?

Okay, so I might be a rare breed, one of only a few vegan bodybuilders and fitness ****s, but do you know what, I like that!

Here are some often asked (sometime quite annoying) myths and questions that are asked to vegans, especially when they are in the fitness industry.

Where do you get your protein?

Stop, please! This is always the first question I get asked, and its getting a bit stale.

Did you know that seitan contains a whopping 75g protein per 100g! Chicken breast and steak sit at 25g of protein per 100g. So ask me again where I get my protein?

Other great vegan sources of protein are black beans (22g per 100g), almonds (21g per 100g), tofu (8g per 100g) and tempeh (19g per 100g). Most people (especially bodybuilders) are too fixated on protein. A well rounded vegan diet will more than adequately give you your RDA of protein and then some!

Do you eat fish?

No. Fish are still an animal, yes..? So no I dont eat them!

So what do you eat then?

Most people seem to get concerned that there will be nothing to eat if you cut meat, dairy & eggs out of your diet. This is especially true when competing as a bodybuilder or fitness **** as their diet leading up to competition contains lots of fish, chicken and egg whites!

Well guess what, my diet is actually probably more interesting than the standard comp prep diet. I can have tofu, tempeh, seitan, beans (kidney, black beans, chickpeas), quinoa amongst many other things. Thats not to say that the regular omnivore cant have those things too, but how many of them do?

Being vegan opens your eyes to more variety and to more creative dishes. I am never bored of the food I eat and I am always eating delicious, different and nutritious dishes!

Vegans can eat anything that didnt come from an animal. I choose whole food plant based as much as possible, because that means the food I eat is closer to the source and doesnt have a lot of additives, preservatives and extra crap!

Do I miss meat?

No, I dont miss meat I dont miss eating rotting flesh! I havent eaten meat for over 10 years and I dont intend to eat it again.

So where do you get your calcium?

Dark leafy greens such as spinach, broccoli and silverbeet are actually better sources of calcium than your beloved cows milk, minus the cruelty!

As you can see there is absolutely no reason why a vegan bodybuilder or fitness **** would not do as well as someone who eats an omnivorous diet.
