Why an All-Protein Diet Doesnt Work

Youve probably heard of the popular Atkins diet or other high-protein diets wherein meat is a best friend for anyone whos wanted to lose weight. As with most things, this all-protein diet has its own set of pros and cons.

At first, it seemed like the advantages outweighed the disadvantages, and everyone was blinded by its immediate effectiveness. However, further studies noted how it wasnt as beneficial as it turned out to be; especially for our digestive systems.

Carbohydrates were given a bad name during this hype. Rice, bread and pasta were supposedly major causes of weight gain. Indeed, carbohydrates and starchy foods turn into sugar as it is processed into our body. The unused sugar is stored into our bodies, which eventually lead to a bit of flab.

BUT this only happens when were too lazy to exercise or when we eat more than we can burn off. Moreover, the body needs carbohydrates because of its fiber content, and because it is a leading energy source that fuels the accomplishment of our daily activities.

Going on an all-protein diet will indeed reduce cravings and make one feel full instantly after a meal. Unfortunately though, no carbohydrates means no energy source, therefore forcing the body to burn stored fat for fuel. Of course, weight is lost, but this leads to ketones buildup, acidosis and damage to vital organs.

High proteins contain saturated fat as well, which may increase the risk of heart disease. And lastly, meats are probably one of the hardest things for our body to digest. Since it doesnt contain the carbohydrates fiber or raw veggies and fruits digestive enzymes, it takes a lot longer for the body to process. This in turn puts our excretory systems at risk.

Nutritionists cant emphasize enough how important it is to maintain a balanced diet. The proper combination of proteins, carbohydrates, etc. is greatly needed by the body to perform wellFeature Articles, and for weight loss to be safe and harmless.
